It has been a great couple of weeks at Big White! Waking up to beautiful mountain vistas and having the opportunity to ski every single day is amazing - and honestly I don't want to go home!

Throughout our training we have been really lucky to have had the help of some great ski instructors. In the lead up to the exam, I was feeling a little hesitant, but with some extra help from one of the instructors I felt that my skiing was really starting to improve. When it finally came down to it, the three day level 1 exam was a great learning experience that helped us all to improve our teaching and skiing skills.

After passing our Level 1 exam, the group was really looking forward to our avalanche training with Matt Atton from Vertical Gain Specialists. We spent the first day of the AST1 course in the classroom learning about how to identify avalanche terrain and how to reduce risk of getting ourselves into trouble in the backcountry.

The next day, we got outside and had the opportunity to search for buried transceivers, and to learn efficient probing and digging techniques. Unfortunately the weather was not on our side that day, so we didn't have the opportunity to head up to the peak to check out some avalanche terrain.

Thankfully Matt was able to arrange his mate Darrell to take us out a few days later so that we could get out for a fantastic morning hiking and of skiing, and have the opportunity to learn more about reducing the risk of getting caught in an avalanche. The AST course was great - and really was one of the highlights of the trip so far!

It has been a great couple of weeks in Big White. I have loved exploring the mountain and the village, and we have all gotten to know some of the local establishments. We learned quickly that if your looking for a night of budget friendly fun then Snowshoe Sam's is the place to go for $4.50 Wing's Wednesday, Sunday Doubles and a giant game of jenga… For a smaller pub with a friendly atmosphere we head to the Bullwheel for a great start to the night...

After another great day skiing, I cannot wait to get up tomorrow to do it all over again. Bring on the snow!!
