EA Instructor Scholarship winner - Emma Ross Smith - Blog 1

15th October 2014

A huge congratulations to EA’s 2014 Ski instructor Course Scholarship winner Emma Ross Smith! Emma is off for an experience of a life time to train and work as a ski instructor at Tahoe in the United States.

Here is her first update before she jets off on a jumbo jet to the US!

I’m Emma Ross Smith, and this year I won the EA ski Scholarship for the 14/15 winter season! I’m from Napier in New Zealand, but have been studying in Wellington and haven’t had as much time on the slopes since I started my degree! I first learned to ski at age 4, taught by my dad at Whakapapa ski field at Mount Ruapehu, New Zealand. I’m just about finished the second year of my Bachelor of Arts at Victoria Uni in Wellington, studying Media Studies and Marketing. The mountain is like my second home, so I’m really looking forward to an extra winter at Northstar at Lake Tahoe in the USA this year!

When I found out that I was a finalist for the scholarship about a month ago, it was so unexpected and I was super excited! I didn’t realize it was such a big deal, but after talking to Nicky on the phone and finding out about all the applicants, I was so nervous for finding out the verdict. When I won I was in a lecture at Uni and felt like telling everyone but considering we were watching a film I had to wait until we finished!

Lake Tahoe looks like such a beautiful place to ski and work, so I’m absolutely stoked to be heading over there. I hope that I’ll have some time to travel elsewhere with new friends while I’m there as well. The USA is such a great place, and I’ve wished for a white Christmas since I can remember. The scholarship is such a gift because I’ve wanted to be a ski teacher for years, and haven’t had the opportunity until now.

Although it’s crunch time at University at the moment with exams and big assignments coming up (eek!) I’ve been trying to organize my Visa, flights and insurance frantically since I only found out about 2 weeks ago! I’m finding new things out about the whole experience every day at the moment, and feeling really positive about it. There’s only 6 weeks to go until the day of, and I’m also organizing some people to take over our flat for when we end our lease one week before I go, so it’s all going on all at once now!

I’m going to seriously miss my friends and family (and my favourite NZ made Peanut Butter!) but I know this experience will be one of the greatest in my life. I’m so looking forward to meeting new people and exploring new places, and doing it all by myself in the USA! I’m also counting down to a white Christmas, even though I’ll be away from my family for Christmas in the first time in my life!
