EA Snowboard Instructor Course – Jackson Gillis – Blog 2
Wondering what it takes to do a snowboard instructor course? Check out Jackson's blog from Norquay, Canada:
Mt Norquay is really impressive and it was great to finally get on the mountain and start training. I am In a group of 7 snowboarders who are here to improve our technique and get our level 1 CASI certificate. Training will run for 3 weeks with 2 days off each week to give our bodies to recover and our memories to expand with all the new knowledge we are gaining.
First week was focused on our surroundings and working on the competencies needed to be a CASI instructor. Second week focused on our ability to retain information and being able to communicate to all types of students – very important skills for an instructor. This week was not only different from content, but also in temperature where it got done as low as -36C on the mountain.
Our instructor Matt is funny and informative and I love his use of games like Top Gun and Jazz Hands and his constructive feedback is really helping me develop my skills – thanks Matt!
I am also on the Norquay intern program and we had a staff orientation and it was good to meet the team and learn about the facilities and what was expected in the Ski School. Work will start right after our exam. The locals also gave us same great tips on what to do in Banff.
On that note - It hasn’t been all work and training. I have been working up a big appetite on the mountain and anyone who knows me will tell you I love food. Banff has great food and some of the restaurants have great meal deals like 16oz steak with jus, a yorky, vegies, fries plus a loaf of bread and salad for $20! The other major purchases have been warmer clothing and accessories to make it easier to survive the much colder temperatures here.
While not on the mountain many of us from the hostel are taking to the nightlife of Banff, with the Sunday Fun day being by far the favourite. This Friday night the crew for Lake Louise are coming to town and we are looking forward to having a good night and catching up with them on their training stories.
After this weekend we will have one more week of training before our CASI exams. So its for a bit of fun this weekend before the I get back to the training.
