GAP Year Ski Instructor Training in Japan – Jack Williams – Blog 2
This just in from Jack Williams, who is currently at Club Med Sahoro, in Hokkaido Northern Japan, training for his Level 1 Ski instructor exam on a full season EA ski internship. Let's see how it's going...
After the two days in Tokyo we ventured to our training accommodation at Monkey Rider in Hakuba. Whilst the snow was on the thinner side, a few of us took the opportunity to visit Matsomoto castle and the snow monkeys which were rad. In the mean time, we were taking full opportunity of days of with some reem après. This was where the real bonding began and helped bring the group together.
We were faced with two weeks zero snow where we were practising drills in a car park, not cool! Since then, we have been graced with dump after dump of champagne powder - Japow could not be more accurate.
It took a couple of days to get used to being on my fat planks again but with a few days of training I was stoked for the exam. I am fortunate enough to have had Bas from Hakuba snow sports as both my trainer and now examiner who has turned me into a carvoholic powder hound.
We are now three days into the exam and I am feeling positive. I have made a lot of good changes with my skiing and fingers crossed have done enough to pass the personal part of the exam. Tomorrow I have my last chance to prove that I am at up to the standard of a NZSIA level one instructor and also my practise teach. Thursday is the final day of the exam and I will have to teach a 30 minute progression to four of the other guys. All being well I will be at Club Med by Friday and living the dream as a ski instructor.
