It's been 10 days now since I touched down in Canada and we have packed so much into those days! We spent 2 nights at the Westin Hotel in Calgary, so we could get all the necessary stuff sorted like getting our SIN numbers, mobile phones and opening a Canadian Bank account. This was a good opportunity to get to meet everybody properly and to see Calgary before we all headed off to our different resorts. A highlight was going up Calgary Tower, as you could see for miles and the Rockies were just visible on he horizon- soon to be our new home for the season!
We arrived at Banff on a beautiful day with bright blue skies and plenty of snow on the ground already- as you can see from the picture of the high street below, we are really lucky to be able to live here for 6 months.
Instructor Training started at Mount Norquay a couple of days later, after everyone had had the chance to settle into our accommodation at the HI Banff Alpine Centre and get all our equipment sorted out. I have completed 4 out of 11 days of training so far and am loving every minute of it, we have a great instructor (Matt) and it's really useful to get some proper coaching and feedback on our performance. You can already see an improvement in everyone's riding!
Today we have had our first snowfall since arriving in Canada, and we have been out riding the fresh powder all day. The temperatures are dropping day by day which is challenging but it has been so worth it for all the new snow.
Other highlights so far have included spotting Canadian wildlife- an Elk ran across the piste under our chair lift one day, and we have also spotted a Coyote nearer the town. We've had a trip up to the Banff Hot Springs where we sat in an outdoor pool at 40C overlooking the mountains- not something you can do everyday.
My next entry will update you on the progress of my instructor training as the CASI Level 1 final exam draws nearer... The snow is still falling outside as I am writing this so it looks like an early night ready for another amazing day making fresh tracks tomorrow! ;)
