Ask ten skiers what the best resort in Japan is, and you will get ten different answers. This is because Japan is wonderfully unique and diverse, and it offers so much more than just riding. It's a place of tradition, culture, charm, authenticity, gastronomy, hot spring onsens, and world-class riding. Powder, powder, powder. The "best" resort depends entirely on what kind of season you want to have.

Niseko: The Holy Grail of Japow

This is the one. The resort that lives up to the hype. Niseko is the pinnacle, the place every powder chaser dreams of. Four interconnected mountains, 15 metres of legendary champagne snow, and terrain that ranges from wide open bowls to some of the best tree skiing on the planet. It is the most international of the Japanese resorts, with an après scene that is as famous as the snow itself. If you came to Japan to ride the best powder of your life, this is where you do it. Late nights, lively bars, and a crew from every corner of the globe. Niseko is the full package.

Tom Sharpe came for one season and never really left. A snowboarder from a state with zero snow, he convinced his mum to add Japan to a family trip, rode powder for the first time, and that was that. When he got home, he started looking for a way back that wasn't a two-week holiday. Three winters later, he's still there. "Somewhere in there 'doing a season' quietly turned into a career, and I honestly couldn't tell you the exact moment it happened. It's pretty wild to be living the life I was only dreaming about not that long ago." That's what Niseko does to people.

Hakuba: Rice Paddies and Powder

Looking for something a bit more authentic? Hakuba's 11 resorts sit in a valley of rice paddies and small farms, with backcountry lines that are next level. It is rural, it is rugged, and it is home to some of the most iconic alpine terrain in Japan. More clear sky days than almost anywhere else in the country, and a distinct lack of chain stores. Just small villages, local onsens, and endless mountains. The snow is deep, the peaks are dramatic, and the lifestyle is pure Japan.

The Golden Nuggets of Japan

And then there are the resorts that fly under the radar. Shiga Kogen is high, cold, and all about the riding. Fewer Westerners, endless terrain, and snow that makes you forget where you are. Rusutsu is for the hardcore backcountry crew. Appi Kogen is still somehow a secret, voted Japan's Best Ski Resort in 2022 and 2023. North facing slopes, dry powder, and a quiet, authentic Japanese experience. Appi will make you a very appi chappy.

Hakuba: Rice Paddies and Powder.

Your Japan Is Out There

Japan is not one size fits all, and neither are we. We have instructor courses and guaranteed job offers across the country, from the legendary powder of Hokkaido to the hidden peaks of Honshu.

We have got spots at Niseko Imagine, Hakuba Snow Sports, Rusutsu, Shiga Kogen, Niseko ProPeak, Appi Kogen, Hakuba Concierge, Myoko Kogen, Frontier Hakuba, Madarao Mountain, Palcall Tsumagoi, Niseko GoSnow, and Club Med Hokkaido. Each one offers a different flavour of the Japanese snow experience.

And it doesn't stop at one season. Some people stick around, move up the ranks, and end up training the next wave of instructors, running a ski school, or guiding in the backcountry. The path past that first winter is there if you want it. Rip bottomless powder through the birch trees, soak in onsens. and find a rhythm that's as soulful as it is stoked. That's what a season in Japan actually looks like.
